Roomy knitwear, a sweater dress for dinner, and a jacket you can take off before lunch.
Sweater weather has a catch: sometimes it ends at noon.
Early fall can mean a chilly walk to the station, a warm commute and a sunny lunch break. You need an outfit that makes sense once the temperature changes.
Start with a knit and jeans for cooler days, a sweater dress for evening plans, or a plain top under a short jacket when the afternoon still feels like summer.
A knit and jeans for the coffee run
For a weekend coffee run, we’d wear the beige ribbed mock-neck sweater with blue wide-leg jeans and simple sneakers. The pale knit gives the blue wash some contrast, and the loose shape leaves you room to move.
Let the hem sit loose over the waist and keep the extras simple: small earrings, a bag big enough for your book, and shoes you can walk in.
If you’re keeping the knit on all day, save it for a cooler forecast. On a milder morning, a tee underneath gives you an outfit to wear when the sweater comes off.
Dinner plans deserve an easy dress
For a dinner date or a birthday meal, the V-neck knitted dress makes getting ready fairly straightforward. We’d choose the khaki version with dark brown knee-high boots and a small shoulder bag.
Here, the details are in the knit: cables down the front, a ribbed waist and fuller sleeves. Leave a little space around the neckline, or add a short necklace that sits inside the V.
Add opaque tights when the evening is cooler. And try your outer layer on with the dress before you leave; those lantern sleeves need enough room inside the jacket.
Leave some room for the afternoon
Some early fall outfits work best with a top you’d happily wear on its own. For a commute or a weekday lunch, try a plain white top, black trousers and the plaid short trench coat. Finish with loafers or simple flats.
The double-breasted front and tie belt give you a more defined waist when it’s closed. Wear it open as the day warms up, and let the checks stand out against the plain clothes underneath.
If you plan to add knitwear later in the season, take that layer into account when choosing your jacket size. You should be able to reach forward comfortably with the jacket on.
